Smart For-Us concept

Smart’s For-Us concept must count among the least practical pickup trucks ever contemplated, but it makes up for its lack of flatbed practicality with lots of cheeky charm.

The concept made its debut at the Detroit motor show in January 2012, where it might easily have been mistaken for a child’s toy among the full-size American brutes. Even the electric bikes it’s designed to carry have to shed a front wheel before they’ll fit in the back.

These colourful sketches from 2011 are the work of Diederik Vanbrabant (in blue) and Emiel Burki (in yellow).

Burki subsequently moved on to Porsche and was responsible for exterior design of its much admired Mission E electric car. Vanbrabant progressed from Daimler to Ford and last year branched out into sustainable furniture.
