BMW Concept Z4

BMW has flip-flopped between restraint and drama in its compact open-topped sports cars, from the soap-bar roundness of the Z3 ragtop (codename E36) to the creases and folds of the Bangle-era Z4 roadster (E85), to the smoothed over second generation of Z4 (E89).

So it’s the turn of a dramatic shape again and BMW looks set to deliver, if the Concept Z4 is any guide. Revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2017, the new roadster is a riot of sharp angles and intersecting planes, perhaps most notable/heretical for arrange its quad lamps in two stacks, rather than horizontally either side of the bisected grille.

These energetic sketches are the work of lead exterior designer Calvin Luk, though the PR machine at BMW has shamefully erased his signature on each one.
