Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Not every Alfa Romeo fan is delighted by the notion of an SUV from the illustrious Italian brand, but it’s hard to deny the logic. If a softroader can prove popular and turn a profit, it could help fund future sports cars and coup├ęs and thereby keep everyone happy. And the alternative is probably to dig a big hole in the ground, bury the brand next to Lancia, and call it a day.

These lively line drawings and Photoshop renderings of the Stelvio SUV show how the in-house styling team, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, approached the task of making a shield-shaped grille sit comfortable on an SUV’s big and boxy form.

Some of the sketches aren’t credited but those that are signed are the work of exterior designer Carmelo Giannone.

It’s a shame that so little of the curvaceous verve shown in the sketches has survived through to the finished car, which despite its sporty nose looks a little dumpy and disappointing in the metal.
